"Stucco Re-coat for new color?
Why don't we just paint our house?"

The results are unarguable..

Here are a few examples why repainting stucco will NOT give you the satisfying finish you are looking for.

1. Surface Penetration & Bonding

  • Repainting only applies a thin layer of paint that sits on the surface. Over time, sun, rain, and temperature swings cause paint to peel, crack, or fade.

  • Stucco re-coating with a new finish (acrylic, elastomeric, or cement-based) bonds directly into the old stucco, filling small cracks and pores. This creates a seamless, integrated surface rather than just covering the existing one.

2. Crack Repair & Weatherproofing

  • Paint does not fix or bridge cracks—moisture can still seep behind, leading to blistering or hidden damage.

  • A stucco re-coat can be applied thicker than paint, with flexible or cementitious mixes designed to seal hairline cracks and improve water resistance, protecting the home’s structure better.

3. Breathability & Moisture Management

  • Stucco needs to “breathe” by allowing trapped moisture to escape.

  • Many paints—especially lower-grade ones—can trap moisture, causing bubbling and damage beneath the paint layer.

  • Stucco re-coats are formulated to remain breathable while still shedding water on the exterior, maintaining the natural performance of stucco.

4. Longevity & Maintenance

  • Paint lifespan: 5–7 years (sometimes less in harsh sun or wet climates).

  • Stucco re-coat lifespan: 15–20+ years with proper maintenance, meaning fewer applications and lower lifetime cost.

5. Aesthetic Value

  • Paint can look “flat” and may highlight imperfections on an old stucco wall.

  • A fresh stucco re-coat restores the texture and depth of the finish, hiding surface blemishes and giving the house a true “like-new” appearance rather than just a color change.

Bottom line
Repainting is a short-term cosmetic fix. Re-coating is a structural and aesthetic investment—it restores integrity, protects against moisture, and lasts much longer, often increasing your home’s value.
